One day over coffee in 1934, Chanslor E. Weymonth, Cal Farley, and Roy Pool agreed that a Boys Club was the answer to the problems of unsupervised leisure of the boys of
In 1936, The Maverick Boys Club moved to the old Amarillo College Gym at Sixth and Cal Farley saw a need in 1939, to help homeless boys who were not being reached by the Maverick Club; thus, the beginning of the Maverick Boys Ranch. The name was later changed to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch to avoid confusion between the two organizations. The Bivins family, again, showed their generosity when Julian Bivins donated 120-acres of land at Old Tascosa to start Boys Ranch. One of the first young men to live at the ranch was a Maverick boy, Roy Turner. Mr. Turner has since served on the Boys Ranch Board. The Amarillo Chapter of AMBUCS (American Business Clubs) has been sponsoring the Maverick Boys Club since 1947. It was the Amarillo Chapter of AMBUCS in 1952, which purchased 26 lots for the present Maverick Boys and Girls Club at 1923 The Maverick Club has been a training home for hundreds of boys. It served as headquarters for many years for the citywide recreational program for thousands of youth. Supervised by Director Ralph Dykeman, from 1934-1982, it has been well received and supported by the citizens of In May 1983, Club memberships were opened to girls making it a co-ed Youth Club. The Club is now known as the Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo. At the present time, The Maverick Boys and Girls Club serves over 3,000 boys and girls on a year-around basis. Two of the main features include a full-sized regulation gym and an indoor Olympic size swimming pool and diving well. The facility also houses a weight room, library, mat room, wrestling room, boxing room and a state of the arts computer lab. Programs currently being conducted under the supervision of Director David Rodriguez are: Swim Team, Summer Program, Wrestling, Smart Moves Substance Abuse/Early Sexual Prevention Program, location of Practice Sessions and Swim Meets for four A tradition of the Maverick Club is the presentation of the "Boy of the Year Award" at a banquet held in his honor. In 1986, the first "Girl of the Year Award" was presented as well. The Maverick Boys & Girls Club is a member in good standing in the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and is a United Way Partner. |
